Church Offices Ransacked and Thefts Reported in Aiken
A memorial Baptist Church at 3100 Vaucluse Road was broken into through the annex and three offices ransacked with about $20 stolen. Across town boxes and racks were damaged or stolen, including a $200 sidewalk rack at J and W Cafeteria and nine more racks. Willie Walker, 17, of 202 Reid Drive, was arrested for shoplifting a $14 shirt from J B White's.

A low pressure system brings a 100 percent chance of rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds tonight. Lows around the mid 40s, winds 15 to 20 mph from the west. Tomorrow features a 30 percent chance of rain and highs near the low 60s. Friday to Sunday look partly cloudy with mild temperatures and highs in the mid 60s.
Barrels Removed In Edgefield Court Ordered DNP Move
Aiken based Sonneborn Refractories and Chemicals completed removal of the last 64 of 106 barrels of the hazardous chemical 2 4 dinitrophenol from the Hart Bonded Warehouse in Edgefield. Circuit Judge James E. Moore mandated the action to avoid jail, with 42 drums sent previously to Thailand and 64 to a Maryland landfill. Homeowners near the warehouse objected to DNP stored as hazardous waste amid health concerns and lack of certified local disposal facilities.

Aiken County Department of Social Services seeks a single building to house all operations. Director Richard T. Poore told the County Council last night five separate DSS locations in Aiken cause administrative problems and higher costs. A centralized site would cut telephone, energy, transportation and service bills and improve control, with the Council Engineering Committee to consider the proposal.
