USC Program Is Backed, Attacked
Andrea Washington, a former housewife with a high school education, pursued a two year course then earned a four year criminal justice degree at the University of South Carolina. She testified to lawmakers about keeping the two year secretarial and business programs in Columbia, arguing they provide a needed service. University leaders defend the programs as distinct from Midlands TEC and other state schools and warn that their removal would reduce accessible options. The state Commission on Higher Education contends the two-year offerings resemble those at technical colleges but cost more.
