An explosion at a munitions depot in Spinboldak Afghanistan sent rockets and ammo flying across the southern town. At least 10 people were killed and about 50 workers and residents were reported missing buried in rubble.
South Carolina environmental officials ordered an emergency shutdown of the Barwell uranium processing plant in Columbia citing contamination and security concerns. Seven year old Drew Dickey and Midland Valley High School Marching Band protested after a California federal court ruled the words under God in the Pledge unconstitutional. About 50 participants joined a parade with KICKS 99 then a downtown Pledge and National Anthem, as the band prepares to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Fourth of July parade.
The Aiken Area Council on Aging started construction of Windham House a 47 unit residential facility for seniors at Morgan Street and Barnwell Avenue on the former Teen Town pool site. Ronnie Young noted the project addresses rising housing costs and the HUD grant support.
