William Ernest Downs Jr. received a death sentence from Judge Casey Manning for the kidnapping rape and strangulation death of 6 year old Keenan OMailia in North Augusta April 1999. Downs waived a jury and pleaded guilty starting a penalty phase that led to a death verdict scheduled for December 28.
Lawmakers rushed to recite the Pledge of Allegiance on the Capitol steps in protest after a US Court of Appeals panel ruled that the words under God violate the First Amendment. Senate and House leaders denounced the decision calling it nuts and vowed action. The suit was filed by Michael Newdow objecting to his daughter reciting the pledge in school.
Aiken report says the Savannah River Site awaits federal cleanup money while Gov. Hodges ramps up a dispute with the Energy Department. DOE spokesman Joe Davis says funding and plutonium shipment disputes are unrelated, with about $760 million of $800 million allocated to cleanup so far.
Grace Harris Whaley, 58, was ordered by Chief Magistrate Judge Rodger Edmonds to undergo a mental evaluation at a June 19 hearing after pleading guilty to ill treatment of animals and keeping domesticated animals in unsanitary conditions. A later sentence hinges on cleaning and restoring the home. 58 dogs and nine cats were seized June 6 by Aiken County Animal Control from Whaley’s Audubon Circle residence.
Dr. Bob Botsch of USA Aiken says Gov. Jim Hodges has nearly 5 million for reelection and will face a strong challenge from GOP winner Mark Sanford. Botsch notes Sanford’s near 60 percent runoff win signals momentum while Hodges remains a resilient incumbent who could still prevail.
