Aiken presents a special issue on Thursday titled Traits of the Past featuring images of people and places that shaped the community. The collection credits residents who contributed to Aiken's history and identity.
Local authorities report 18 year old Daniel O Neal of North Augusta died in a traffic crash on Interstate 77 in Winnsboro. He was pronounced dead at the scene according to Aiken County Chief Deputy Coroner Tim Carlton.
Obituary notices list several individuals including Alvin Gadsden of Norwalk and Carl Gordon of Monroe plus Genevieve Klos and Cynthia Morgan from Aiken and Owell Quattlebaum. The notices appear in the 5A obituary section.

In statewide results, Mark Sanford led governor’s race with 65 percent, Greer Barrett topped Jim Klauber in the Third District, Henry McMaster won Attorney General with 70 percent, Andre Bauer earned the Lt. Governor nomination with 58 percent, while the county results echoed statewide margins.
Election returns from Aiken County show Governor Mark Sanford winning with 65 percent versus Bob Peeler 35. Congressional and state races include Gresham Barrett 69 percent over Jim Klauber 81 percent. Attorney General Henry McMaster 70 percent over Larry Richter 30, Andre Bauer 58 over David Thomas 42. Secretary of State Mark Hammond 54 over Ed McMullen 48.
The U S Postal Service raises first class stamps from 34 to 37 cents and postcard rates from 21 to 23 cents starting Sunday. Other service fees increase modestly as post office boxes and certified mail costs go up. Aiken Postmaster James Sizemore notes stamp availability and directs surplus 34-cent stamps can be exchanged for 3-cent stamps.
The Navy and utilities move about 60 loads of used reactor fuel yearly by rail, with shipments rising if Yucca Mountain near Las Vegas becomes the dump. Senate action may clear hurdles to burying waste in Nevada, while critics warn transport routes will provoke public outrage. Six defendants in a drug gambling and money laundering ring tied to Edgefield prison were sentenced in Columbia federal court. Sentences ranged from probation to over a decade for relatives and associates of inmates Jorge Gonzalez Vasquez and David Crews, who led the operation.
