A roof fire at Chalet North Apartments in North Augusta started by lightning damaged the roof and crawl space of two units and caused smoke and water damage to four more. North Augusta Department of Public Safety crews responded at 2 p.m. on U.S. 25, estimating total damages at seven thousand dollars.
Owen Clary, director of Adult Education in Aiken County, received the Outstanding Adult Education Test Development 1980 award at the state conference in Myrtle Beach. The honor recognizes a standardized test for adult education students to earn credit, awarding one unit per passing student who scores 65 percent, and the test is now used statewide.
Allen Bayles, former Aiken County extension agent, received two awards from the South Carolina Association of County Agricultural Agents at its Greenwood annual meeting. He placed third in newsletters and earned second in Public Relations Program Pride for promoting Aiken's Makin' Farm and Home Show.
The Aiken County Taxpayers Association will meet at 6 PM at the Carolina Barbecue in New Ellenton. All county residents are invited to the Dutch dinner and meeting.
The Aiken Life Underwriters meeting scheduled for tomorrow is postponed to July 18. Association officers will be installed then.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Department reports two grand larceny incidents. Cuthbert Salley on Mount Beulah Church Road says $1,230 in farm and lawn tools plus hydraulic fluid, a saw, a plow and other implements were stolen. Rick Sand on Banks Mills Road reports $1,270 stolen from his home between June 21 and 25, including a stereo, tape deck, end tables, speakers, a refrigerator and an air compressor.
Susan Dillard finished first in the 10 kilometer Peach Orchard Run in Trenton on Saturday with a time of 41 49. Betsy Scott was reported as the winner in error, finishing second, and the Aiken Standard notes the correction.
