Gunnells Wins Valley runoff as Grant loses in Democratic primary

Low turnout and weak cross‑ticket votes felled incumbent Sheriff Paul D. Grant who earned 15 of 59 precints in Aiken County. W Ralph Gunnells carried Horse Creek Valley and boosted turnout, while Mike McElhaney edged Jack Adkison for the Valley Council seat by 68 votes amid overall turnout dips.

Voter turnout shifts mark council race in split precincts

In Aiken and surrounding areas turnout fell in several precincts after a prior election. Grant lost votes while Gunnells gained in most rural precincts, with rural and Valley precincts showing varied turnout and several polling issues noted by Ralph Haywood of the county election commission.

Ballots moved to council complex after security concerns

Oswald arranged for ballots to be received at the Aiken County Council Complex rather than the Cooperative. Candidate W Ralph Gunnells refused to sign the new agreement, leading to a court order request for SLEC to take charge and transport ballots to the computer center. Ballots were later checked by election officials and observers. no SLED agents were assigned to the transport.
