The Aiken Rotary Club discussed membership growth and service projects as it kicked off a new year led by president Rick Osbon. Osbon, a longtime local businessman and county council member, welcomed new member Clay Killian and honored Barbara Smith as a Paul Harris Fellow. Barbara Strack, Buzz Rich, and Raymond Mizell assumed new roles, with weekly meetings Mondays at 12:30 pm at the Aiken Municipal Conference Center.
After heavy weekend rainfall the South Carolina Forestry Commission ended the Red Flag Fire Alert for all counties. The last 94 wildfires burning 515 acres are now contained and firefighters have resumed normal duties. Caution remains due to lingering dry areas and outdoor burning rules remain in effect.

Nancy Smith Mann, longtime educator and Area 2 assistant superintendent in the Aiken County School District, retired again for love after marrying childhood friend Frank Mann. Her career spanned 47 years, from teaching in West Columbia to leading Belvedere Elementary and serving as associate superintendent before a six year stint as Area 2 assistant superintendent.
The Aiken Historic Preservation Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Complex at 214 Park Ave. AAHE and City Council items follow. Aiken Red Cross volunteers, praised by Emergency Preparedness Coordinator David Ruth, met all goals during the Plant Vogtle disaster drill. In a letter to Aiken Chapter Manager Dave McRae Ruth commended Mr and Mrs Miniaci for superb work at the Emergency Operations Center.
Candace Russell, adjunct professor of music at the University of South Carolina, will represent USC at the International Trumpet Conference in Manchester England. The conference runs July 26 at the Royal Northern College of Music and Russell will perform at the Festival of Trumpets Concert on July 6. She teaches trumpet and music and also plays in the USCA Community Band.
