The State Department of Education orders 630 new school buses and Aiken County could obtain up to 20 for district use. The article notes a calendar and classifieds section and includes local columns and a Where in Aiken feature.
The FBI investigates a string of prepaid cell phone purchases in Aiken with officials from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and Aiken Department of Public Safety assisting. FBI Columbia Division spokesman Tom ONeill declined to detail the case and no arrests were reported.
A study reported by Education Week says about 52.5 percent of South Carolina freshmen will graduate in four years. Aiken County officials note 2005 2006 rates around 72 percent, with 1,800 freshmen in 2002 and 1,326 seniors graduating last year.
Avondale Mills nears terms with a buyer for the Woodhead Division sparing about 125 jobs. Stephen Felker Jr. says negotiations are in early stages as multiple parties tour the facility and consider the operation. Townsend Division was already sold to lease, with details on page 16A.
Ambassador Linton Brooks said the MOX facility will move forward despite prior funding fights. He noted the House opposed funding while the Senate funded it, and predicted negotiations this summer with progress expected this fall.
