Aiken native chosen as church moderator

Rev van Standridge Gray of Atlanta has been elected moderator of the 217th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The Aiken native, a pastor and profess or, will serve as titular head and spokesperson for two years, leading a denomination of about 2.3 million members.

Dangerfield leaves post as Commerce chief in SC

Tim Dangerfield will resign as chief of staff at the South Carolina Department of Commerce after guiding the agency since January 2004. The Aiken resident cited commuting from home and turning to a full-time role as reasons for stepping down. He will be replaced by C. H. Maguire, longtime Cabinet affairs head for Gov. Sanford.

Aiken County approves budget with EMS expansion and road fee rise

County Council increases taxes with a $5 car road maintenance fee hike next year while avoiding a millage rate increase. The $17.8 million budget gives a 5 percent raise for EMTs and road deputies, creates six EMS positions, and plans 12 hour shifts at busy stations. A stormwater maintenance fee of $24 was put on hold, with funding rules to be developed within 90 days.

Sanford in Iraq visits SC troops and carries messages home

Gov Mark Sanford visited Camp Speicher near Tikrit with a delegation led by Condoleezza Rice and Donald Rumsfeld. He met with South Carolina units the 1220 Engineer Company from Saluda and the 117th Signal Battalion from Greenwood, noting morale and personal sacrifice amid 120 degree heat.
