South Carolina Governor David Beasley ordered police to stop enforcement of the annual vehicle inspection law for at least 10 days. A pending budget bill would eliminate the $3 inspection requirement, but the change takes effect July 1. Beasley acted to stop tickets immediately.
The Commerce Department reported May housing starts fell 1.3 percent to a 1.24 million seasonally adjusted rate, marking the fourth decline in five months. Single family construction dropped to its lowest level in over two years as gains in the Northeast and West could not offset declines in the Midwest and South.
Clemson University plans to eliminate the equivalent of 18 administrative positions. The move will affect at least 50 faculty jobs and save $300,000 immediately with an additional $200,000 possible in two years. Few staff will lose jobs due to retirements attrition and a hiring freeze.
