A 17 year old boy from Cleveland, Tony Steele, remained in critical condition after a second heart transplant in two days at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The second transplant followed failure of the first transplanted heart, performed seven hours earlier.
CHICAGO AP The DuSable High School valedictorian Kathy Slater won a red 1986 Toyota Tercel in a program to boost grades and attendance. Seventeen other top seniors received designer watches radios and cameras at an awards ceremony June 12. The school, near Robert Taylor Homes, has Chicago's highest teenage pregnancy rate.

Murray Haydon, 58, a long time recipient of a permanent artificial heart and the world's third implant recipient, died at 10 45 a m at Humana Hospital Audubon Louisville. He had relied on a respirator and spent most of his time in intensive care after surgery. Medical officials cited worsening brain and lung function and a family decision against dialysis as factors in the decline.
Americans’ personal income fell 0.1 percent in May marking the first decline in a year while consumer spending rose 0.9 percent the largest increase in five months. Subsidy payments to farmers inflated both months. excluding them, income would have risen 0.3 percent in April and 0.4 percent in May.
