The May Consumer Price Index shows a 0.2 percent rise led by a 2.5 percent jump in gasoline after earlier declines. Food costs rose 0.4 percent with fruit and vegetables up 1.9 percent, while energy other than gasoline fell 4.4 percent. Analysts expect 1986 inflation near 2 percent.

Howell C. Dean 47 of Aiken shot himself in Tennessee after allegedly killing ex girlfriend Linda D. Richardson 30 of Aiken. The two had argued during which detectives say she threatened him with a knife. Dean left a 16 page note.
