The Air Force launched a secret Atlas Agena satellite from Cape Kennedy at 7:39 a.m. EDT to orbit about 20 000 miles above Southeast Asia. The mission aims to provide early warning of enemy missile attacks with a 26 foot Agena carrying a television camera and infrared sensors to detect sites and movements.
Edward Heath led the Conservative party to a decisive victory over Harold Wilson's Labour government winning 316 seats to 278 with Labour and others trailing. In Des Moines a black neighborhood quieted after a gun battle that left Lewis S Wheeler, 26, of Kansas City, Missouri dead. Police sealed a 30 block area after windows broke cars damaged and more than a dozen people, including children, were hurt. Wheeler had been cornered since Tuesday following his escape.
