Senator William Proxmire proposes a fair credit billing law to curb harassment by computerized bill collectors. As chairman of the Senate subcommittee on financial institutions he vows top priority for the bill, criticizing major credit card firms for failing to fix simple billing errors.
President Nixon's top economic adviser Dr Paul McCracken warns unemployment will rise further before easing. He cites 5 percent jobless rate and says inflation is slowing with a notable change expected in 1971, though the job outlook remains uncertain.
UN Secretary-General U Thant has returned from five days of cordial and useful talks with Soviet leaders in Moscow. He described discussions with Prime Minister Kosygin and Foreign Minister Gromyko as focused on the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Six persons were arrested in two raids near Montreal in a major break against a Quebec separatist group. Police seized over 650 pounds of dynamite, with 300 pounds found at Prevost and 350 pounds at a Laval suburb home.
A British Leyland Motor Corp survey found panty hose wearers drive more safely than those in stockings and garters. The elastic stockings’ pull allegedly lifts feet from pedals, causing unintentional acceleration.

Col Tony L. Carter Jr. U.S. Army (Ret.) of Aiken dies at Aiken County Hospital. Funeral services set for 10:30 a.m. at Aiken First Presbyterian Church with Rev J Luke Goodwin and Capt Thomas Cundiff officiating. Burial at Mt Olivet Cemetery Nashville Tennessee. Survivors include widow Edna Pierce Carter daughter Dorris O Dell son James F Carter three sisters.
Five days of celebration in Aiken County running July 5 to 12 for South Carolina’s Tricentennial. Notable events include W J B Dorn speaking at Hamburg opening ceremonies, The Best Friend steam locomotive rides, ASCE landmark designation for the railroad, a July 11 parade featuring Fort Gordon band and veterans, a Fort Galphin reenactment at Battlefield Park, a street dance in Kalmia Plaza, and museum exhibits at the Aiken County Museum with relics on Chesterfield Street.
U S and South Vietnamese report their toughest weekend in over two months as fighting eases in Cambodia. Mekong Delta battles claim 70 and 49 enemy deaths over two days while withdrawal of portions of the 1st Air Cavalry Division begins, with a Nixon deadline set for June 30. Across Kompong Thom, North Vietnamese pressure eases as both sides brace for a possible showdown.
Maj. Gen. John C F Tillson III, commander at Fort Gordon, praised the fort as a premier training site with ideal weather and many schools. He noted permanent construction, including a new hospital to serve the Army’s southeastern region, and reported Ft Gordon payrolls of 122 million for 25 000 military personnel and 32 million for 3 500 civilians. Tillson called relationships with the Augusta area extremely cordial and described his post as the finest assignment he has had. He was guest speaker at the Aiken Rotary Club at the Hotel Commercial.

Coast Guard in Portsmouth logged 65 distress calls and sent tugs to free the Sebago after it ran aground. Property damage surfaced in Norfolk, Petersburg, Brookneal, near Richmond and Jackson Mississippi.
Leaders from Arab states met in Tripoli to coordinate Palestinian guerrilla groups using their nations as bases for raids on Israel. Egyptian President Nasser attended while Yasir Arafat sent a message urging intervention to avert renewed fighting with the Jordanian army.
Edward Cushman Jr. and Sylvia Westerdahl are named to the Aiken County Public Defender Corporation to begin July 1. Cushman, a former lawmaker and WWII Marine veteran, will run civil practice from 335 Park Ave. SW and serve as public defender for those unable to afford criminal defense. Westerdahl, spouse of Atomic Energy Commission attorney Allen Westerdahl, is a Tennessee- and Oak Ridge- trained lawyer joining as assistant defender.
