Bryan Allen, 26, from Bakersfield, piloted the Gossamer Albatross 22 miles over the Channel in 2 hours 49 minutes. The feat earned $200,000 for Allen and designer Dr. Paul MacCready of Pasadena, surpassing an earlier 1.15 mile demo with the Gossamer Condor.
