NASA to Scan Savannah River Plant With Eye Safe Laser
NASA will conduct low level laser remote sensing over the Savannah River Plant from Thursday through Saturday. Aircraft at 500 to 2000 feet will produce pulse images for each foot of surface area to study algae in Par Pond map L Lake wetlands and assess vegetation in Steel Creek. The four engine turboprop will land at Bush Field tomorrow.

Reward Reaches 25000 in Shari Smith Abduction Case
Authorities report the reward for information in the abduction and death of 17 year old Shari Smith has risen to 25000. Smith disappeared May 31 from her Lexington County home and her body was found in Saluda County a week earlier. The cause of death remains under investigation. The Education Improvement Act requires half of building funds for tax relief in debt heavy districts. In 1984-85 Consolidated School district of Aiken County split $1,988,440 equally between tax relief and capital projects, saving 7.3 mills in taxes while debt service stayed at 27.3 mills. If a waiver is approved, about $1.2 million could fund capital improvements and debt service may rise to 32.8 mills, 1.8 mills below last year’s rate without rollback.
