County trims budget as withdrawal plan moves ahead

Aiken County Administrator Bill Shepherd said the finance department will rework figures for the Fiscal 1999 2000 package after a Tuesday work session trimmed and added a few departments. About 110000 is being added, with 42000 needed for Public Works salary upgrades, while the budget remains balanced at 65.2 million and the tax millage held at 63.5 mills. Shepherd sought council guidance on uniform allowances and clothing purchases not tied to specific jobs.

Plantation dig uncovers colonial history along Savannah River

Archaeology students join Augusta State University instructor Mark Groover and Tammy Forehand of the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program at Silver Bluff Plantation Sanctuary. Test pits and mapping reveal a mid-18th century site with an old chimney at a former brick dwelling, likely linked to the Galphin family trading post and plantation beginning in the 1740s to 1760s.

Playhouse project moves toward downtown Aiken

The Aiken Corporation reviewed capital cost estimates for moving the playhouse to Newberry Street and voted to urge the City Council to proceed. The $2.37 million plan would demolish the Mark II theater and Whittle Building, with the town funding coming from city dollars, asset sales, and a capital campaign.

Yugoslav forces begin Kosovo withdrawal after NATO deal

After 11 weeks of NATO airstrikes, Yugoslav army convoys began leaving Kosovo with about 150 trucks and armored vehicles crossing the Medare border. Smaller groups moved from Pristina to Podujevo as part of the withdrawal, while a peacekeeping force with British, French, and later US troops prepared to enter Kosovo.
