Special general election set for House District 81
A special general election to fill the vacancy in House District 81 will be held Oct. 5 instead of Nov. 2. The seat became vacant after the death of Rep. Rudy Mason, R-Aiken. Elections Director Stuart Bedenbaugh said the state Election Commission notified the change and the filing period remains June 18 to June 28 with the primary on Aug. 17 and a runoff on Aug. 31 if needed. The Aiken County Commission will meet Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the special election in the county council building.

Frye Defeats Hite In South Carolina House Race
Republican Marion Frye won the House District 39 special election in Saluda, defeating Les Hite after a high spending campaign. Frye received 3792 votes to 1941, a 66 percent margin, as Hite poured in about 80 thousand dollars of his own money while Frye spent 30 thousand. Spearman resigned to join the state Department of Education.

Pope names Redcliffe principal in Aiken schools vote
Dr. Teresa L. Pope was approved as the next principal at Redcliffe Elementary by the Aiken County Board of Education. Boy Nearly Drowns at Richardson Lake Water Park
A 6 year old boy nearly drowned at Richardson's Lake Water Park and was rescued by lifeguard Williams Jr who performed CPR. The child was pulled from five foot water, revived, and is recovering in ICU at the Medical College of Georgia. Public relations said the lake is safe and staff response saved the boy's life.
