Aiken City Council member Robert S. Perry says he is seriously considering a run for the House District 81 seat. He expects a quick decision and plans to announce well before primaries qualify. The district includes Aiken and suburbs and opened after the death of Rep. Rudy Mason.
An elderly Warrenville man Otis Parker age 72 was struck and killed by a car driven by Richard Jordan Jr age 22 on Howlandville Road Thursday evening. Parker died of major head trauma as the driver was cleared of fault in the 16th traffic fatality in Aiken County that year.
Columbia The governor announced a nuclear waste task force to study the future of Barnwell facility and waste generated in South Carolina. The panel will evaluate options including potential closure or isolation from national operations.
Farmers report a good early peach crop in Aiken and Edgefield counties with stands selling sweet fruit. Titin Farms operator Caelmers Carr says size limited by late April hail and ongoing dry weather, but taste and eatability are better than last year. SC growers expect abundant supply and top quality fruit.
NATO prepared to deploy along the Macedonia Kosovo border as Russian forces head toward Kosovo amid debate in Moscow over Russian participation. A Russian convoy marked KFOR was seen near Belgrade and in Serbia while another report said 1,000 Russian troops were to fly into Kosovo. NATO said 200 Russians were en route to Kosovo before larger contingents arrive under dispute over command. The first NATO entry from Macedonia was delayed up to 24 hours.
Five year old Michael Moore from New Ellenton nearly drowned Tuesday at Richardson's Lake Water Park. Lifeguard JR Williams Jr. credited Red Cross training and quick action for saving him. Publicists praised lifeguards and stressed ongoing Red Cross CPR and first aid courses offered by Aiken County Parks Recreation and Tourism and the Red Cross. ORANGEBURG The Allied General Nuclear Services site in Barnwell County, once called a white elephant by a federal appeals court, will reportedly not house a first orackind uranium enrichment facility. The 1640 acre site was in the running for a US Enrichment Corp factory that could have created 1300 jobs and a $25 billion investment, but Bethesda based Allied General Nuclear Services announced it is pulling back plans. President William H. Timbers Jr. cited risks and costs of the necessary technology as reasons for not pursuing the project.
