Sentencing Guidelines Sought in South Carolina Reform
Greenville AP officials aim to recommend legislation by year’s end to unify South Carolina’s crime laws into a set of sentencing guidelines. A state Sentencing Guidelines Commission committee expects longer prison terms for serious offenses and more relief for minor crimes. Judges could deviate 15 percent from recommended sentences with no written explanation. Currently parole can occur in less than one-third of a 10 year term. On average, prisoners serve about 40 percent of their sentences.
