Shrimp Profits Lag Despite Good Fall Outlook Coastwide
Myrtle Beach reports a bright fall white shrimp forecast along the Carolinas, yet profits may lag due to high fuel costs and imports. Brown shrimp fell short this summer while white shrimp run is the best in four years, though many fishermen still expect tough times amid pricey fuel and low shrimp prices. Local market owner Kitty Jordan notes diesel at 32.50 a gallon, with an average crew burning about 1,000 gallons weekly, prompting boats to stay dockside at times.

House passes bill to preserve war sites in South Carolina
The U S House approved the Southern Campaign of the Revolution Heritage Act to study and designate Revolutionary War sites in South Carolina for preservation. The plan, led by Rep John Spratt, involves the Interior Department and state and local groups, with potential inclusion of North Carolina sites and federal funding where needed. The measure aims to safeguard battlefields such as Kings Mountain and Cowpens and honor figures like Sumter Marion Morgan and Greene. The proposal could quickly pass the Senate and await President Bush's signature.
