Sanford signs missed school days bill

Gov. Mark Sanford signed a law granting local school districts more flexibility in making up missed days. The General Assembly may forgive days or let districts determine makeup dates, start and stop dates, and in service days. Local officials praised the move for closer voter accountability and local control. The signing occurred at the Roper Mountain Science Center in Greenville with House Speaker David Wilkins and local educators present.

Cable barrier program advances to final construction phase

South Carolina's transportation department moves to bid on 70.4 miles of cable barriers costing about 4.2 million to separate medians 72 feet wide or less on interstates 34 miles of added barriers have already yielded 2 953 cross median impacts and 630 billed parties totaling 859 000 with 654 000 recouped since 2000 the program follows deadly crashes including a 2000 I 26 Chapin fatality and 1997 I 77 incidents.
