Fire knocks out power to thousands in New York City
A transformer explosion at a lower Manhattan utility plant cut power to about 63 000 customers, darkening Greenwich Village SoHo and Tribeca. Traffic was halted and streets blocked as National Guard and police managed the blackout with crews still battling the blaze two hours after ignition. No injuries were reported.
