Research vessel dedicated to memory of Ronald Brown in Charleston
The $52 million NOAA ship named for the late Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown was commissioned at a Charleston waterfront pier. The 237 foot vessel, first new NOAA ship in 17 years, will study atmosphere and ocean depths with advanced labs and equipment before heading to the eastern Pacific to study clouds and rainfall. Attendees praised Brown for transforming NOAA into a key driver of economic development, and Alma Brown spoke of his pride and the crew’s duty as the ship sails.
