Russian Zvezda module launches to back International Space Station
The Proton K rocket lifted Zvezda into orbit from Baikonur Kazakhstan, key to the International Space Station. The 42000 pound 48 foot module will provide life support power data processing and propulsion and its docking with the ISS is expected later this month. The successful launch ends years of delays and raises hopes for a 2005 first crewed flight.

Solar flare triggers radio blackouts and aurora possibility
NASA data show an X class solar flare detected by the SOHO satellite at 6 37 a m EDT causing radio disruptions on Earth facing the sun. Two coronal mass ejections were observed earlier in the week with a 40 percent chance of affecting Earth's magnetic field by Friday and potential aurora displays into mid latitudes including the southern U S.
