Century mark heat wave bakes Plains with record highs
A five day heat wave pushed temperatures over 100 across Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, with Omaha reaching 109 and Sioux City 108. Heat caused illnesses, two deaths, and about 1,200 cattle deaths in southwest Iowa. Open Door Mission in Omaha ran near capacity as shelters housed homeless from the heat. Weather officials predicted a drop into the 80s and 90s by Friday.
