Drowning at Varnville Pool reported. rabies scare spreads

Charles A. Brunson of Varnville, age unknown, drowned Tuesday at the Varnville Pool on U.S. Highway 278 after a lifeguard chased him from a deep area. Hampton County Coroner Gordon Rhoden confirmed the death as authorities traced a brief moment before the lifeguard answered a phone call. In a separate advisory, DHEC warned recipients of a free kitten from a Longs area family along State Highway 905 to seek medical guidance after five family members began rabies treatment. the kittens were distributed July 1 and the health department urged immediate contact.
