Bruce Perry Quits Aiken Public Defender Post
Bruce Perry ends his role as assistant public defender for Aiken County in his final week and moves to Bamberg. In a General Sessions trial, defendant Chris Ready, 21, Graniteville, was acquitted of housebreaking after Ready testified he and friend Garth Treadway were fishing and wandered to the house. Key witnesses included Charles Hammond and Deputy Michael Hoehn, who testified about items found and the attic entry. The jury accepted Perry’s argument that no burglary occurred since an open door did not prove breaking, citing only a found chain as the sole recovered item.

Salary Supplement Raises Questions

An older attorney general opinion in the 1970s allowed similar pay supplements for college officials. The Ethics Commission declined to rule, citing the 1978 McLeod opinion, while the attorney general’s office says the precedent may apply to other state agencies.
