A public meeting to discuss annexation options for Centre South in Aiken will be held tonight at 7 30 p.m. in the Aiken County Public Library. Aiken Planning and Zoning Commission meets today at 2 30 p.m. to review revised Centre South plans for a shopping center and multi family housing at the fork of Silver Bluff and Pine Log roads amid resident protests.
A slow-burning fire in Hitch cock Woods yesterday afternoon consumed pine straw and ground vegetation before being controlled. Aiken Department of Public Safety spokesman Charles W. Cupp said the blaze posed no threat to nearby urban areas due to light wind. Officials investigated the cause as 20 firefighters and forestry tractors fought the four to five acre fire, leaving mature trees intact.
Coca Cola Co announces return of the old formula as Coca Cola Classic beside its new Coke. Analysts say the move may succeed but could confuse consumers about which product is the real thing. Some critics disagree with the decision to alter the 99 year old formula.
A partly sunny, hot and humid day is expected with highs in the mid 90s and a 20 percent chance of late afternoon thundershowers. Tonight will be fair with lows in the 70s and southwest winds under 5 mph. Tomorrow's winds shift to 5 to 10 mph from the southwest.
At about 1 p.m. yesterday the McCrosson family watched a pony trotting past their back window. The pony wandered into a neighbor’s yard where the SPCA found it resting in the shade. It is now at the SPCA awaiting owner claim. The incident brought relief the animal was not an elephant.
In Greenville the 48th Miss South Carolina Pageant enters its preliminary rounds with two Aiken County contestants Stephanie Cook and Valerie Trapp. They perform in swimsuit and talent while last night’s evening gown showcase drew praise. Contestants compete in three groups across three nights with prizes awarded in talent and swimsuit.
President Reagan will be hospitalized Friday for removal of an intestinal growth and a colon examination. Doctors first found a benign polyp over a year ago and urged further testing to rule out additional growths. Reagan will receive a pain killer and sedative, but no general anesthesia, and plans to discharge Saturday to Camp David.
Congressional negotiators seek at least 50 billion in savings next year while preserving Reagan era limits on tax increases and Social Security benefits. Sen. Pete Domenici notes the task is difficult and unlikely to have overwhelming chances, yet they press on within the White House framework to resolve the 1986 budget impasse.
Three Aiken State Park lakes receive sterile grass carp from the South Carolina Water Resources Commission as part of a multi year weed control program. The fish weigh about half a pound, are eight to ten inches long, and are stocked at ten per acre to deter weed growth.
