Hunley sub study aids bio-terrorism defense efforts
Charleston reports that the Civil War submarine Hunley, raised off the South Carolina coast, was used in 2000 01 to test whether X ray or gamma ray irradiation harms crew DNA. Researchers found minimal DNA damage, noting the hull limits and wet sand hindered results. The work informs forensics and fatality response, with implications for sterilizing remains and safely handling infected tissue.

Notes indicate Evonitz stalked Culpeper girls
Culpeper County notes found in the apartment of Richard Evonitz, a suspected serial killer, indicate he stalked two Culpeper County girls. The girls were unaware of the danger, with one saying she felt scared that a man watched her. Evonitz later killed himself after abductions and murders linked to other cases in Spotsylvania and Corbett counties. DNA tests may confirm links to the Lisk and Silva slayings.
