Willis ton resident Alonzo Dicks Sr., 53, drowned while helping swimmers in distress during a family outing on St. Simons Island Georgia. Police and AP report an ocean wave knocked several people and Dicks was pronounced dead after CPR at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center. He was husband to Lois Dicks of Dayce Manufacturing and a deacon at Thankful Grove Baptist Church.
Cpl. Kenneth Johnson a 38 year old State Patrol trooper was fatally shot at a public safety checkpoint between I 26 and US 17 in Berkeley County. The gunman Jesse Waylon Sapp 22 fled and was wounded. Johnson died from the shot to his vest area. Sapp held on escape charges and received medical care.
Jack and Gloria Riley, long-time vendors at the Aiken County Farmers Market, offered a wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables from their Banks Mill Road farm.
