In New Braunfels Texas hundreds were urged to evacuate homes and campgrounds near Canyon Lake as water spilled through the dam. Mayor Adam Cork said he did not know how many residents had left the area around Canyon Dam after five days of storms.
The FAA revoked the pilots licenses for two America West crew members accused of attempting to fly a jet from Miami while intoxicated. The emergency orders are effective immediately under federal rules barring flight with recent alcohol use or an alcohol level of 0.04 or higher. America West requires a 12 hour rule.

A community display on Silver Bluff Road features a large red, white and blue flag crafted in front of the Pinto home. The pre dawn project honors Independence Day with the message God Bless America. Ninety-nine percent of the work was done by Tabitha Pinto and neighbors, with family veterans in the household.
A large Independence Day show drew thousands to the Savannah River banks as fireworks launched from North Augusta lit the opposite shore. Aiken residents Lloyd and Sarah Flemming viewed the display from the Fifth Street Bridge, enjoying the sunset and bursts above the river.
Three people died in a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport near a ticket counter for El Al. The gunman Mohamed Hadayet, 41, was killed by an El Al guard. FBI hesitated to label the attack terrorism. The Fourth of July incident disrupted the nation’s third busiest airport. Waiting passengers and police confined the terminal as authorities investigated. Israel blamed terrorism while FBI officials weighed the motive as a possible hate crime.
The Pride of the Valley band from Midland Valley High School marched on Constitution Avenue in Washington for the National Independence Day Parade. Band Director David Hastings said crowds cheered as the group represented South Carolina. The trip included other opportunities.
Aiken Department of Public Safety staff including senior engineer Johnny Johnson kept operations running as residents celebrated Independence Day. Officers reported upticks in fireworks complaints and a pending fine for discharging or selling fireworks within city limits. Johnson and colleagues noted mixed shifts and family visits, with expectations of busier evening activity.
