Inquest Set July for January Beech Island Deaths
Aiken County coroner Sue Townsend will hold an inquest July 17 into the deaths of Teresa Anne Kelly 12 and Clifford Martin Johnson 14 who died January 25 after a minibike collision with a tractor trailer on U S 278 near Beech Island. Robert Bazmore of Savannah Ga driver for Schwerman Trucking Co has not been charged.

Unemployment For June Holds At 7.3 Percent
Civilian unemployment stayed at 7.3 percent in June for the fifth straight month, the longest such pause in over 15 years. The Bureau notes about 600,000 people left the labor force, mostly youths, offsetting sluggish job growth and ongoing manufacturing decline. The service sector added 85,000 jobs, but total employment fell from 106.96 million in May to 106.37 million in June. Unemployed numbers held at 8.4 million as labor-force participation dropped. An alternate rate including armed forces stood at 7.2 percent.

Vandalism Widespread Problem In Aiken County
Vandalism is a widespread issue across Aiken County authorities say. Sheriff Carrol Heath notes it appears to affect the whole county with a deputy’s patrol car in Graniteville damaged by a brick. Commercial vehicles and snailbox and street sign vandalism are common, with a Graniteville family reporting wires pulled from a car and eggs thrown. Chiefs Busbee and Heath describe it as largely random, not targeted at one group.
