Charles H. Kern a Mead Hall School founder and noted Aiken horseman died Tuesday in Aiken at age 77. A Charleston native and former Du Pont employee, he retired as a civil engineer with the Savannah River Plant and served in World War II. Graveside services are planned in Aiken Memorial Park with Rev. Howard Hickey officiating. he was a longtime member and junior warden at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.
Four groups including the Georgia Conservancy NRDC Energy Research Foundation and South Carolina League of Women Voters accuse the U S Department of Energy of breaches under the Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act at Savannah River Plant. They allege lack of permits inadequate groundwater monitoring and undisclosed post closure plans. The letter was filed in Washington with signatories from the four groups.
Aiken Technical College president Dr. Paul L. Blowers advocates adding an associate degree in arts or sciences by 1988 to become a true community college. He notes seven of 16 technical schools already offer such degrees and a state task force recommends all colleges adopt them by 1988.
