Grocery prices kept climbing in June though the AP market basket rise slowed. The July average bill was about 6 percent above year start, with meats leading gains and eggs easing. Farm prices also rose sharply but are expected to ease later.
A local motorist struck a dog and fled. another driver stopped, rushed the animal to a veterinarian, and the dog is recovering. Aiken father jokes about ladders for his daughters as life returns to routine after a four day holiday.
A dry, warm spell settles over the county with cloudy skies and high temperatures near 90s. Lows around 70 tonight, highs tomorrow in the low 90s, and a 10 percent chance of rain through Thursday with a threat of scattered storms each day through Saturday.
Two homicides and a fatal shooting marred the Fourth of July in Aiken County. Myrtle Carpenter, 50, was charged with the murder of Gerald Greenway, 44, found in Carpenter’s carport with an automatic shotgun believed used. Sarah Youmans, 43, charged with assault then murder after Herbert Youmans died from gunshot wounds on Schultz Hill near North Augusta. Nathaniel Coates Jr., 22, was shot. brother George Coates, 28, was charged with two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill after a fight in Toole Hill left one injured and the other jailed.

The Mount Canaan Baptist Association event blends old and new with rides from Royal Carnival Co and gospel singing while local residents like Lela Lee and Mrs See seek relief from the heat.
The state weighs a spot audit request amid a bonding company dispute over funds tied to Cleo J. Scott former Aiken County clerk. Victor S. Evans says the audit is valid and seeks $45 378 missing from the clerk’s office. The bond issue traces to a failed $10 000 annual surety claim.
In Augusta, former Richmond County superior and state courts official Mrs Stewart P Garrett Jr and her husband were sentenced to 20 and 15 years respectively for stealing 9010 from court fines and bonds. Judge Fleming stated the task was hard as many victims were poor. The court also ordered recovery of the missing funds.
