Today, July 3, begins the period known as Dog Days, lasting until August 15. The hot, humid stretch has been linked to Sirius and ancient beliefs, though modern science questions the connection. Clemson Extension’s Tom Earle notes recent dry late summers and early falls and avoids certainty about Dog Days.
States show varied holiday fuel costs with South Carolina averaging 1.257 per gallon and North Carolina 1.237 as AAA affiliated Carolina Motor Club reports. Nationwide average for the Fourth is 1.266, with New Jersey lowest and California highest.

Ritz of Washington and Lee University questions whether the Declaration of Independence was signed July 4 1776 rather than August 2 1776 and suggests a possible erasure in the heading from The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America He notes the document is kept in a sealed container at the National Archives and says archivists should reexamine it while other scholars remain cautious about removing it from view.
Fireworks and family events spark Independence Day observances across the area. The Freedom Festival at North Augusta High School Stadium features a 7 p.m. games start, 8 p.m. concert by Fort Gordon unit, flag ceremonies, pledge by Sen. Thomas Moore, and a fireworks show at dark. Free flags for children. Augusta Mall display at 9:30 p.m. Aiken Recreation Department hosts Thursday party with games, swimming, and music by Foxie 103.
Aiken County Council approved a rate study for PSA with a plan to reduce wastewater rates by seven cents per thousand gallons and adjust PSA operations. The panel also discussed widening Silver Bluff Road and creating a citizen advisory board for the Aiken County Detention Center. The study, prepared by Arthur Young & Co., will be reviewed again at a special session Tuesday along with the 1985-86 budget.
ATC signs for a Vax 780 computer with state aid and tuition, launching a two year computer data processing degree to train future programmers. The college plans additional programs including LPN training and teacher aide degrees, but faces county funding cuts that could trigger staff reductions and service terminations.
