Copper miners strike drives nationwide labor action across industry
Nine thousand Detroit city workers walked out while New York police and other unions threaten Thursday action if wage demands are unmet. Simultaneously 39,000 copper miners and refinery workers began a seven company national strike across nine states with pickets in New Jersey Maryland Texas New Mexico Arizona Montana Utah Nevada and Washington. Union officials cite cost of living adjustments as the main issue amid a 10.23 per hour wage average and slumping wiring and auto industries.
