Backers Seek Signatures for Galardi Sheriff Bid

Campaign backers led by Carl W. Littlejohn plan to file a petition to place Frank T. Galardi on the November ballot as an independent candidate for sheriff. Galardi, a former Aiken County juvenile and crime prevention officer, must secure at least 2 000 valid signatures from county voters. organizers say 30 to 40 supporters are circulating more than 500 petitions with room for 14 signatures each.

Darlene Hale, 1979 Miss Aiken County, appears in the 23rd Miss South Carolina pageant at Greenville Civic Auditorium. She will model swimsuits, attend rehearsals, and perform Friday talent with finals televised Saturday at 9 p.m. on WJBF and WIS.

County seeks control of million dollar Hall trust fund

The Aiken County Indigent Care Commission will go to court on July 21 to win control of the Mattie C. Hall trust bequeathed to the county hospital in 1961. If ruled for the county, about 400000 in interest would fund indigent care this year, though appeals could delay years.

Unemployment rises in Aiken area as plants cut back

More than 100 workers joined the area’s unemployment rolls at the S C Job Service Office in Aiken bringing total claimants to 1200. About 15 or 16 plants faced layoffs with layoffs ranging from 10 to several hundred workers as plants lengthened summer shutdowns. Graniteville Company's plants closed last week affecting about 2290 to 2300 workers. FMC also planned longer shutdowns at its Aiken Industrial Park plant. Unemployment benefits were widened by a temporary lapse in the one week waiting period through September 1.

County Council forms panel to study aging Aiken Courthouse

Four council members Walter C. Guy Jr Medwell Hill Homer L. McGee and Billie K. Trapp were appointed to study options for the 99 year old Aiken County Courthouse. The move sets no immediate action though chairman Carrol H. Warner says it is time to start looking. Local historic groups back renovation as prior citizens debated whether to move or rebuild at the same site.
