Washington’s John Riggins ran 38 times for a Super Bowl rushing record 166 yards helping the Redskins rally to a 27 17 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Pasadena. The Hog line opened lanes for Riggins as Theismann threw two touchdowns and Washington held off Miami’s early lead.
In Pasadena the Redskins and Dolphins abandoned anticipated defensive duels and opened their offenses. Major plays included a 76 yard Woodley Cefalo pass, a 98 yard kickoff return by Fulton Walker, Garrett’s 44 yard reverse, and Riggins’ 43 yard TD run for Super Bowl records. Theismann nearly intercepted by Bokamper, and a late drive fizzled when Garrett failed to stop the clock.
The article portrays John Riggins as a larger than life football figure and the Redskins star who powered a 27 17 Super Bowl victory over the Dolphins. It outlines his 38 carries for 166 yards and a 43 yard fourth quarter TD, his four straight 100 yard playoff games, and his bold quotes about being in charge. It notes his Jets past and return to Washington under Joe Gibbs, his independence, and his Kansas roots.
