An avalanche of soggy snow buried two girls on a mountain in Hyak Washington. Police said a second slide later forced searchers to pause and resume at daybreak. The victims were Jean Kisman 10 of Seattle and Linda Angell 13 of Renton.

HCA proposes a 190 bed private general hospital costing 9.775 million dollars on 142119 square feet with 150 medical surgical beds 17 maternity beds a nursery 15 pediatric beds plus a 4 bed coronary care unit and 4 bed ICU, open 24 hours funded privately, completion 18 to 24 months. National Facilities Corp plans a public non profit three story hospital on 140000 square feet with 250 beds including medical surgical 182 cardiac 10 ICU 10 pediatric 16 obstetric 12 psychiatric 20, funded by tax exempt revenue bonds, open 12 months after completion with 60 days post completion for opening.
Washington senators warn gasoline rationing may be needed by the second quarter if Arab oil shipments do not resume. Federal energy officials urge utilities to cut power use five percent in February and keep a 12 day oil stock by March 1. Analysts weigh price and policy shifts as fuel allocations affect 148 utilities in 39 states.
Aiken County jury finds Michael Lee guilty of murder in the Graniteville store operator killing after a three day trial. He receives a life sentence as the armed robbery charge is rejected. Lee labeled his plea as not guilty before sentencing.

Linda performed The Way We Were and Susan The Matchmaker. First runner up was Kathy Haywood with Marcia Brasher as second runner up. Cindy Wright received Miss Congeniality.
