Special prosecutor Leon Ja worski asks U S District Court to use John W Dean III as a major government witness in the Chapin Watergate case. Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott says he has evidence he considers grounds to charge Dean with lying to the Watergate committee and disputes Dean's testimony about Nixon knowledge before March 21.
The Pravda party newspaper began printing letters denouncing Alexander Solzhenitsyn as a traitor and continuing the denunciation of his Gulag Archipelago. Konstantin Simonov, a renowned writer, joined the chorus though his tone was milder, praising none of the harsher critics.

Burrel Whitley will moderate. candidates include Reginald Boyleston Olin Osbon Emilie Towler Dr Charles Perkins Ben Rusche Henry Fulmer and Jean Rhodes Anderson. Election day is Tuesday Feb 4.

Louis Welborn Cassels 52 longtime United Press International editor and author died at home after a coronary. A Duke graduate he joined UPI in New York and served in the Washington Bureau covering elections from 1948 to 1970. He wrote religious columns from Aiken and earned the Christopher Award and other honors.
