Small plane crashes on Pea Patch Island Delaware

Two people die as a small single engine plane headed from Ambler Pennsylvania to Columbia South Carolina crashes on uninhabited Pea Patch Island in the icy Delaware River near Fort Delaware State Park. The aircraft burst into flames about 5 45 p m on Sunday evening one mile from the Delaware shore. The pilot had radioed engine trouble to Philadelphia International Airport before the crash and authorities worked through the night to recover bodies and reach the site by helicopter since the island is not accessible by car. Emergency crews, Coast Guard and clergy were among those responding as residents watched from nearby shores. Fort Delaware historic site noted in report.
