Explosion Levels Jones Electric Co. in 1953 Aiken Tragedy
In January 1953 a basement blast at downtown Jones Electric Co. on Laurens Street leveled the store and four adjoining businesses in Aiken. Ten residents died and most victims were burned beyond recognition. Firefighters, EMS and Savannah River Plant units responded within minutes. Emergency crews aided by Augusta fire company quickly contained the blaze.
