Aiken Marines Deployed As Iraq Reserves Mobilize
About 80 Marines from the 2nd Direct Support Detachment based in Augusta are activated for Operation Enduring Freedom. Seven are from Aiken County. The unit, a motor vehicle maintenance team, will support the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force for up to a year or possibly two years. The mobilization adds to more than 3,600 Marines already mobilized and over 4,500 more joining this week. Family Day and a Thursday morning ceremony at Augusta unit are planned, with Gideon Bibles distributed by Ed Hammons, commander of the Marine Corps League in Aiken, who notes veterans understand the challenges ahead.

Personal crisis standoff ends with psychiatric transport
An unidentified Aiken man in his 30s barricaded himself in his apartment at Carriage Park on Two Notch Road, prompting a four hour police perimeter. About 20 to 25 officers including a Special Response Team negotiated his surrender around 5 p.m. No weapons were found and the man was taken to a hospital for psychiatric treatment. The incident caused the four unit buildings behind Weeks Recreation Center to be evacuated and residents were advised to stay in cars or seek cover in the park until the man turned himself in.
