Red Cross Honors Volunteer From Aiken County
Susan Huff of Aiken County received the True Value American Red Cross Helping Hand Award for outstanding citizen involvement. Nominated by Mike Burkhart, Huff has built disaster training, instructed CPR First Aid, and chaired Mass Care surveying 41 shelters. Her work helped train 210 disaster volunteers and establish shelter plans for 128,566 residents.

55 Alive Defensive Driving Course for Seniors
Seniors age 55 and over are invited to attend a two day 55 Alive Defensive Driving Course through the AARP chapter. The session runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Aiken Municipal Building on February 7 to 9. The fee is 8 dollars, non refundable. Limited to 25 registrants. ECMO Gives Hope for Boy After Smoke Inhalation
Jason Smith survived after severe smoke inhalation with ECMO support and a rare lung heart bypass procedure. Doctors said survival hinged on ECMO, as lung transplant was unlikely given his size. The family faced debt without insurance, while community and DSM Chemicals workers provided aid and a recovery fund was set up through Martha McGee.

Schofield pupil tops county spelling bee to state meet
Colin Ligon, a 14 year old from Schofield Middle School, won the county spelling bee and will compete at the state contest March 10 in Columbia. He credits his mother an English teacher and his hometown schooling for his success. Other contestants included Ashley McAlpin Matthew Burns Allison Jones Celita Frazier Joshua Johnson Brandie Quick Joshua Faglier and Jenny Williams.

City Council Allocates $500,000 to 20/20 Program
City leaders approved a four year funding package totaling 500000 for the 20/20 education and development initiative. Funds will be drawn 200000 from utilities, 200000 from the general fund, and 100000 from the accommodations tax in 25000 increments. The council also asked offsetting the current year by using 16000 previously allocated to the Aiken 20/20 program and urged future cycles to fund the full 25000 accommodations tax amount.
