Aiken County Open Land Trust ACOLT has acquired 24 acres to form the Carolina Bay Nature Preserve near Price Avenue. Federal Judge Charles E Simons Jr rejected efforts to overturn indictments against Elmore Montcrieft of Ehrhardt South Carolina and Albert Shaw Nelson of Miami saying there is enough evidence for the jury to decide the charges in a multi million dollar cocaine sales conspiracy. The two are among seven defendants named in the indictment with five others having pleaded guilty. The judge sent the jury to weekend recess with instructions not to discuss the case and told defense to be ready Monday morning.
Drug trial creft and Salley, attorney for Nelson, urged dismissal on lack of conspiracy proof. Prosecutors Marvin Caughman and Terry Wooten presented nearly two dozen witnesses and documents to convict Montcriest and Nelson. The judge found substantial evidence and ruled against Salley on a money laundering count, portraying Nelson as a major cocaine wholesaler and Monteriest as a key South Carolina customer.
Police investigate nearly a dozen brush fires sparked along roads from Rutland Drive to US 1 in Graniteville and nearby areas within Aiken Granit eville and Langley fire districts. Firefighters battled 11 fires, some near homes, with witnesses seeing a brown Chevrolet sedan throw burning debris. Forestry officials aided. no residences damaged.
