An unidentified disease has killed 11 horses and spread over 10 miles from the outbreak site in northwestern New Mexico. Federal veterinarians have collected hundreds of samples since January 9, seeking a bacterial, viral, or toxic cause with tests ongoing. Dr. Dennis Saari of Long Island, a pathologist on the federal team, says tox screening is being conducted on feed samples.
Detroit native Carlos Rogers of the Toronto Raptors traveled to Detroit to donate a kidney to his older sister Rene Rogers. Doctors say he may have to skip the transplant due to his own health. Rene is described as sicker than expected.

The South Carolina House voted 72 to 45 to reject moving the Confederate battle flag from the Statehouse dome and instead send the issue to a public referendum. Gov. Beasley urged relocation to ease racial tensions. House Speaker Wilkins supported a vote, while Republicans largely opposed the plan. The measure moves to the Senate for possible revival.
At a public hearing DOE representatives heard Dennis Lee of Research for Better Technologies argue against burying radioactive waste underground. He claims neutralization could cut costs and future risks, challenging the TRAP belief in long term containment. The Savannah River Site holds 456,841 cubic feet of waste, about 7.5 percent of the national total.
Aiken County Deputy Billy Wilson and Joseph Gartrell Jr. were treated and released from Aiken Regional Medical Centers after a patrol car struck Gartrell’s vehicle on a highway. Wilson’s car spun, hit a telephone pole, and traffic backed up for about an hour. Witness William Matthews helped pull the deputy from the wreck and described the scene. He detailed purchases of houses rental properties a finance company and a Kentucky church loan while detailing the scope of Nelsons cocaine operation from south Florida to other states.
In a Pennsylvania federal case set against a major South Carolina market, the government says the ring moved over 2 million dollars in sales. Elmore Montcriest of Ehrhardt Bamberg County is described by witnesses as a key customer in the operation. Bowers testified Nelson sought an investment partnership in the late 1980s and claimed to have supplied knowledge and money. Richard Williams, a drug courier, and Williams’s associates have been central witnesses amid defense objections.
