State probe cleared Aiken County officials of using surplus turkeys and dam donations to buy votes. Solicitor Barbara Morgan stated there was no criminal intent and that Ham and turkey giveaways have been halted in favor of gift certificates.
Retired Aiken pharmacist Leonard Browder said he was pleased President Clinton granted him a pardon for a violation of federal prescription guidelines. Browder noted the pardon was about prescription guidelines, not a drug conviction, related to Carvocet N 100 he prescribed.
Solicitor Barbari gan said jury seating in Beaufort County for Arthur Hastings Wise may take a week or longer. Wise faces the death penalty for the September 15 1997 killings of four Phelan Co. workers at a plant rampage.
Diane Rutherfurd has lived in Aiken all her life and plans to stay. She co-owns Stoplight Deli on Laurens Street with Teddy Milner, calling downtown a large, supportive family. Her daughter Fresca agrees, preferring Aiken's small-town feel over a big city.
Susan Finiak, 39, surrendered to Aiken County Deputies confessing to killing Rudolph Hydrick, 71, at a mobile home on 12 Fortune St. The body was found in the kitchen, beaten with a large stick, and Finiak is in custody at the Aiken County Detention Center awaiting further investigation.
