George W. Bush took the oath as the 43rd president amid inaugural pageantry and protests. Seven Cabinet nominees won swift Senate approval as Republicans seized control after eight years of Democratic rule.
President Clinton issued more than 100 clemency actions as he closed his term. Mel Reynolds received a commute from prison and could be released soon. Full pardons went to Roger Reynolds Susan McDougal and Henry Cisneros. Aikenite Leonard Browder also pardoned. Chicago Mayor Daley welcomed Reynolds' early release.
Rudolph Edward Hydrick, 71, was beaten to death at his Warrenville mobile home on Fortune Street. His daughter Susan Finiak, 99, confessed to killing him and is in investigative detention, charged with murder. The body was found in the kitchen, and the incident occurred at least two days earlier.
A fire on December 28 damaged the G H Bostwick Room at the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in Aiken. Sprinklers limited flames but water caused plaster and termite-damage issues. Lisa Hall of the city Parks and Recreation notes improvements planned and safeguards learned for preserving displays.
Ms. Hall reports 500 photos were copied and framed items discarded after a fire. Structural repairs are planned with cost estimates coming in weeks. The hall will remain closed for months as displays are reorganized and silver and gold memorabilia are stored at the State Museum in Columbia during renovations.
